A disc-detainer cylinder stacks rotating discs, each with a gate; it opens only when every gate is aligned. These tools carry a front truing fork that engages and rotates one disc at a time. A tubular cylinder uses a ring of pins around the keyway; the matching tool has a tubular head with a guide collar that seats against the cylinder wall so force can be applied evenly. Safes typically use disc, blade or side-milling mechanisms with anti-drill and anti-manipulation features and require high-precision tooling.
Disc tools are commonly 7.0 / 7.5 / 7.8 mm by disc diameter; tubular tools are commonly 7.3 / 7.5 / 7.8 mm by cylinder outside diameter, and a 3-piece set covers most 7-pin tubular locks. Side-milling blade tools target side-milled safe cylinders; hex key sets are for panel and body dismantling.
